DNC Bicycles Donated to Adopt-a-Bike Program at CU-Boulder
The Adopt-A-Bike Program at the University of Colorado was granted 50 Schwinn cruiser bicycles, expanding its fleet to 150 available bikes. These “Freewheelin” bikes were ridden at the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions as part of the largest bike-sharing project in US history—a Bikes Belong project sponsored by Humana Insurance.
The goal of the student-led Adopt-A-Bike initiative is that accessible and affordable bicycle rentals will further campus sustainability and foster community. “Students ride around with a bike and a lock for anywhere between one week and five years, and in the mean time we maintain a dialogue about their experiences and challenges” said Anthony Hannagan, founder of the Program and grant recipient. “Bike-sharing programs like this keep bikes ready on campus, and out of the impound lots.” In addition to curbing the annual waste of abandoned bikes, the program caters to students who are new to CU-Boulder and new to cycling.
National press recently featured campus bike-sharing programs, which created buzz among local cyclists and curiosity about CU-Boulder. The New York Times published an article this month on bike giveaways at small, private campuses. The University of Colorado, which was recently ranked as one of the top 15 sustainable campuses in the nation by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, is unique partly because of its large population and intricate linkages with Boulder. Like all of the CU bicycle programs, Adopt-A-Bike is a customized solution for CU-Boulder, bringing sustainable biking options to a large student body and precluding abandoned bikes. "Working with the student-organized Bike Club with their adopt-a-bike program has been an important element of a sustainable transportation package that we offer to our students,” said Peter Roper, Sustainable Transportation Program Manager of the CU Environmental Center.
Adopt-A-Bike was founded by Bike Club in 2006 as a Sustainable CU grant project and recently partnered with the University of Colorado Environmental Center.
