University of Colorado Faculy & Staff Eco-Leaders

cuThis year we are pleased to formalize the CU Office Eco-Leader Program. We have had great success with making it an official program for CU-Boulder! Vice-Chancellor Tabolt has agreed to expand and formalize the Faculty and Staff Environmental Liaison Program into a new faculty/ staff campus sustainability program.

The program will be coordinated by the CU Environmental Center and has two components: Department Eco-Leaders (Individuals) and the Green Office Certification (Departments).

The program is designed to update and inform CU's Faculty and Staff about environmental issues and events on the CU campus. They are key in spreading this information along to their department colleagues. Also, we are interested in hearing Eco-Leaders’ questions, comments and concerns about the program or any environmental issues; this way we can improve and increase the effectiveness of our efforts. This new program is organized through the Environmental Center, with the support of members of the Campus Environmental Council and the Campus Resource Conservation Committee as it helps CU-Boulder to be a university leader in environmental sustainability.

BACKGROUND

Education and outreach are the most effective strategies in creating an environmentally literate and sustainable campus. A substantial portion of the outreach conducted by the Environmental Center focuses on students, however our efforts must not overlook the needs of faculty and staff. Faculty and staff make up a large part of our community, are the knowledge keepers over time in a university setting, and work closely with students. Increasing staff and faculty awareness of environmental policies, operations, resources at the university will maximize participation, reduce resource consumption and save money, and provide practical knowledge to pass along to students. As the employer of over 7,000 faculty and staff, CU-Boulder has a tremendous impact on the community.

In 2005, the Environmental Center initiated the first year of a more formal faculty and staff Environmental Liaison Program. Over 50 building proctors, office managers, and department heads attended brown bag lunches on conservation topics tailored toward office practices, attended Eco-Leader orientation training sessions, and received a monthly e-newsletter.

The duties of the Eco-Leader include:

  • Attend one one-hour orientation training session,

  • Utilize and maintain an Eco-Leader Manual of resources and guides for office environmental practices. The manual will be provided by the Environmental Center.

  • Receive a monthly e-newsletter and disseminate relevant information to their departmental colleagues.

  • Facilitate an assessment of office practices. The assessment will be conducted by trained student staff of the Environmental Center.

  • If a department chooses to pursue Green Office Certification, the Eco-Leader will facilitate this process by scheduling the training programs for their departmental colleagues. It is suggested that these programs be incorporated into existing departmental meetings in order to increase participation. The trainings will be conducted by Environmental Center staff.

  • Attend an annual Eco-Leader Appreciation banquet.

The Environmental Center has partnered with staff in Facilities Management, Parking and Transportation Services and other operational departments where appropriate to ensure accuracy of information and effective utilization of the Eco-Leaders. As you can see from the outlined responsibilities, the program is not intended to create undue demands on staff’s valuable time, but to create educational avenues. It is our hope that this program will build a community and culture of support for resource conservation on campus resulting in financial and environmental benefits.
