Campus Environmental Awards (2002)
The 2002 Environmental Awards Luncheon will take place on Tuesday, April
16, 2002 from 12 to 1 p.m. in room 235 of the University Memorial Center.
The awards ceremony will recognize the significant environmental achievements
of the campus in the past year. The following individuals and departments
will receive awards for their extraordinary efforts:
Bernard Amadei of the Department of Civil, Environmental,
and Architectural Engineering for Green Faculty.
Bernard Amadei
is committed to Green Building through promoting sustainable development
and system thinking in curriculum and research of civil engineering programs
at CU Boulder and other U.S. Universities. He is leading a paradigm shift
in engineering education and practice called Earth Systems Engineering.
Judith Curry of the Department of Aerospace Engineering
for Green Faculty.
Judy Curry played a key role in the successful establishment
of the Environmental Studies graduate program that are scheduled for implementation
in fall 2002. The new program will educate at the professional level to
address the complex environmental issues facing local and the global community.
John Bruning of Facilities Management for
Individual Achievement.
John Bruning has been a strong supporter, and
in many ways, the founder of CU’s Integrated Pest Management programs.
He also is a strong advocate for the creation of a campus-wide IPM policy
that would govern the use of pesticides in all campus departments.
UMC for Green Building.
The expansion and
renovation of the UMC has served as a pilot green-building project on
the CU-Boulder campus. The UMC project teams prioritized sustainability
as one of the guiding principles of the UMC expansion and renovation.
Environmental Award Honorable Mentions go to
Sam Sandoe of University Communications for
Individual Achievement.
Sam Sandoe is an avid conserver and recycler of
office paper. It is conservatively estimated that Mr. Sandoe saves 5,000
clean sheets of white, 8 x 11 paper each year through reusing paper before
recycling and duplexing copies.
Dave Smith of the Department of Computer Science
for Individual Achievement.
Dave Smith has ridden is bike everyday, without
fail, for the last 20 years. He also encourages his colleges to use alternative
transportation.
