Get Involved: Student Positions Job Descriptions
CU students have been employed in the following positions in the Environmental Center in the past few years. Please inquire as to what positions are currently available. Interviews and hiring are typically done in August for Fall and Spring semesters and in May for Summer work.
Starting pay varies from $8 - $10 per hour, depending on position and experience. Time commitment: 8 to 20 hours per week.

Audio-Video Production Assistant
Document campus events and activities. Film production and editting skills required. Produce video content for web. Journalism or Film Studies student preferred for access to equipment. This is an on-call position.
Bike Clinician
This position will plan and host bicycle maintenance clinics at the
bicycle station, covering a variety of topics from introductory
maintenance to advanced tuning. Noon clinics will cover basic flat
fixes and minor drivetrain adjustment. Afternoon clinics will cover
in-depth topics. Experience working with groups and bicycle maintenance
skills are strongly desired. Availability: noon, occasional afternoons. One position.
Bike Program Assistant
Bicycle advocate will organize bicycle events, maintain a campus bicycle rental fleet, organize volunteers, and assist with general bicycle program operation. Must have some basic bicycle maintenance skill, customer service experience, and thorough attention to detail. One position.
Bike Station Staff
Interested applicants should have a basic understanding of bicycle maintenance techniques, and must be able to repair flat tires and adjust drivetrains. Seeking outgoing personalities who will communicate effectively with a variety of visitors. Knowledge of local transportation systems a plus. Shift is Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Position is jointly managed by the Environmental Center and Parking and Transportation Services. Background check required. 4 positions available.
Campus Sustainability/Blueprint for a Green Campus Coordinator
Work with administration and departments to improve CU's environmental policies and operations. Coordinate environmental roundtables and awards for the CU-Boulder campus and plan for future Colorado Sustainability Summit conference. Coordinate the five-year revision of the Blueprint for a Green Campus: An Environmental Action Plan for CU-Boulder. Excellent communication and organizing skills. One position.
Communications Coordinator
Promote the Environmental Center and its programs on campus, in the community and across the nation. Assist with promoting events and recycling, transportation and energy programs as needed. Develop media contacts. Write press releases, environmental columns, letters to editor. Coordinate monthly newsletter. Creativity and excellent written and oral communication skills. One position.
Co-op Housing Coordinator
Develp educational programs and events on student cooperative housing and on eco-villages. Develop proposals for student co-op housing at CU. One position.
Earth Education for Children Coordinator
Coordinate the Environmental Center’s internship and volunteer program that teaches environmental education in area K-12 schools. Work with teachers and volunteers to establish time slots and plan curriculum. Recruit and coordinate CU students to regularly visit classrooms. 1-2 positions.
Energy Conservation Outreach Coordinator
Educate students, staff and faculty about the benefits of renewable energy and reducing energy use on campus. Design creative displays, flyers and advertisements, table at events, distribute information and give presentations to students, faculty and staff. Help design and implement new campaigns to increase awareness on campus about energy issues. There may also be opportunities to help implement renewable energy projects on campus. 1 - 2 positions.
Energy and Water Conservation Outreach Staff
Assist Energy Program Manager and other program student staff in designing and implementing innovative and creative campaigns to motivate campus community to engage in energy and water conservation. Strategies will include guerilla marketing and awareness-raising tactics, public events, creative information displays, website development, peer presentations. Req'd skills: comfortable and confident in presenting and speaking to groups of students, good communication skills: (speaking, writing), ability to complete projects and maintain deadlines with minimal supervision. 2-3 positions.
Energy Efficiency Projects Coordinator
Help identify and implement energy efficiency and renewable energy projects for the UMC, Recreational Center and Wardenburg. Work closely with the three buildings’ proctors and occupants, as well as the Campus Energy Officer and the Environmental Center Energy Program Manager. Oversee LEED certification renewal process. Keep budget of all projects and provide periodical updates to UCSU Finance Board and Legislative Council. Conduct pos-evaluation surveys for all projects. Investigate available grants to off-set capital cost of selected projects. Preferred Qualifications: Self-motivated and organized; Excellent interpersonal skills; Experience identifying energy conservation measures, including the application of renewable energy, based on energy audits of buildings; Experience coordinating projects and balancing budgets. One position.
Energy/Water Program Assistant
Help supervise student staff working on these issues. Coordinate with other student groups at CU and other campuses to develop new energy and water campaigns for CU. Help track and promote trend data, identify speakers and plan events relating to energy and water. Identify areas for improvement in campus policy and operations concerning water and energy. This is a higher level position; management skills and excellent writing and communication skills are required. Pay rate dependent on experience. 20 hours per week.
Environmental Justice Coordinator
Coordinate, create and collaborate with campus and community resources on Social and Environmental Justice projects. Create EJ initiatives for both on campus and in local communities. Work closely with Diversity Outreach Coordinator and CU Assembly for Social Equity.
Environmentally Responsible Purchasing Coordinator
Research the prices and availability of commonly purchased office products for campus use. Advocate for contract provisions and a purchasing policy. Educate campus purchasing staff about their greener options from copy paper to computers. One position.
Events Coordinator
Organize logistics of campus environmental events, from conferences and concerts to speakers and slideshows. Involves developing program ideas and funding proposals, reserving locations and equipment, ensuring contracts are signed, serving as a liaison between speakers and the University, attending all events, etc. Requires excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. One position.
Graphic Design and Publications Coordinator
Produce ads and posters for events and programs, layout newsletter, brochures and publications. Experience with QuarkXPress, Photoshop, Illustrator necessary. One position.
Greek Sustainability Outreach Coordinator
The Coordinator will engage the broader CU Greek leadership and community in adopting sustainable actions in their houses, including energy audits, efficiency improvements or renewable energy; getting recycling and composting in houses. Work with Greek governance on the creation of a Greek Sustainability Board composed of members of the Greek Community. Recruit and coordinate “sustainability chairs” – student liaisons in individual houses. Promote – and seek opportunities to present on – the benefits of sustainability actions to key decision-makers in each house. Be a liaison to the Greek community and leadership on CU Environmental Center and City of Boulder sustainability programs and projects. One position.
Green Building Coordinator
Help CU be at the forefront of environmental design and construction. Review campus construction projects, provide input to CU’s planning process, advocate for and implement green building standards and policies, and explore ways to reduce campus construction waste. Assist campus green building subcommittee with research projects and administration needs. One position.
Green Office Program Coordinator
Educate CU Faculty and Staff about sustainability issues. Coordinate a network of departmental eco-leaders; schedule office check-ups, trainings and presentations; manage green office certification program. One position.
Green Teams Coordinator and Assistants
The Green Teams help off-campus students "recycle right" by distributing recycling literature, explaining recycling procedures, and answering questions on the Hill and other student-populated neighborhoods. Late afternoon and evening availability required. Coordinator will organize the volunteers and staff of this recycling outreach program. 2-3 positions.
Healthy Campus Coordinator
Help strengthen and implement CU's policy on Integrated Pest Management and ensure pesticide use does not harm humans and wildlife. Educate and organize the campus community and advocate for alternatives to toxic pesticide use. Research and make recommendations on the campus¹ use of cleaners and chemicals. Strong organizing and communications skills. One position.
Housing Promotions Coordinator
Coordinate outreach on environmental issues to students in the residence halls. Provide support to transportation, energy and recycling programs. Communicate with RA's and Hall Directors, Housekeeping and Food Service staff. Train and coordinate "eco-reps" for selected halls. One position.
Marketing and Promotions Coordinator
Coordinate marketing and advertising efforts including marketing materials and message development. Provide promotional support for events. Assist with production of ads, posters and displays. Coordinate production of video and radio clips. Improve graphic capacity. One position.
Office Assistants
Provide office coverage, answer phones, assist students who visit the Center, help with library and research materials, and perform clerical and filing duties as needed. Must be available to work lunchtime shifts. 2 - 3 positions.
Promotions Assistants
Be the active promoter of all Environmental Center programs. Must love to work with other people! Conduct postering, tabling, consumer education and expand the "Live Green" pledge campaign. Provide office/event support as needed. 3 - 4 positions.
Recycling Assistants - work study required
Work you can feel good about with an award-winning recycling program. Learn the business of recycling through hands-on collection of materials, operational work at our campus facility, and special events recycling. Potential for outreach assistance, and waste reduction and research projects. 10-12 positions.
Recycling Graphic Designer
Coordinate the design and production of displays, ads, posters and brochures for CU Recycling. Creativity a must! Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator necessary. One position.
Recycling Operations Manager
Serve as lead worker and assist with operations quality control, maintenance, training, special events, and driving. Requires excellent knowledge of CU or similar recycling program¹s material processing and equipment. One position.
Recycling Program Business Research Assistant
Conduct research and evaluate opportunities for improving CU's recycling program. Conduct research on marketing and message development, establishing new programs and recovering additional materials. Advance implementation of a CU food waste composting program and state durable goods exchange program. One position.
Recycling Promotions and Outreach Staff
Educate the campus community about recycling and waste reduction. Develop and distribute information, conduct visits to campus offices, and give presentations to students, faculty and staff. 1-3 positions.
Recycling Special Materials Manager
Coordinate the collection, marketing and distribution of harder-to-recycle and special materials, i.e., toner cartridges, tyvek, transparencies, diskettes, charitable donations, school supplies. One position.
Special Events Manager
Coordinate recycling at special events ranging from home football games, concerts, conferences, fairs, and races. Must have valid driver’s license. One position.
Residence Hall Eco-Leaders
Help turn your residence hall into a greener place. Learn about environmental initiatives on campus and educate your peers about sustainable living. Must live in a campus residence hall. Work 2-4 hours/ week for a $150/ semester stipend. 10 positions.
Sustainable Food Coordinator
Research opportunities for local, organic food products in campus dining facilities. Work closely with food service and purchasing staff to research price and availability. Conduct marketing and coordinate educational events. One position.
Sustainable Transportation Marketing
Marketing assistant will contribute to campaign development and execution on sustainable transportation topics. Eligible candidates should have previous advertising experience, excellet writing skills, thorough attention to detail and consistent communication ability. One position.
Sustainable Transportation Promotions Coordinator
Coordinate marketing with the Environmental Center promotions staff, local transit agencies, and CU Parking & Transit Services and develop promotions targeting direct contact with students. One position.
Temporary Cardboard Recycling Assistant
Start off your semester making a difference! Recycle cardboard at residence halls during move-in - mid-August through early September. Flatten boxes, empty containers, and direct students to recycling bins. Physical outdoor labor. Flex. hrs. 7am-10pm. Work 10-40 hours/ week. Potential work before 8/15. 4 - 8 positions.
UMC Environmental Coordinator
Coordinate recycling collections and outreach in the busy University Memorial Center student building. Conduct outreach and give presentations to building tenants and staff. Help the UMC be environmentally responsible in aspects such as purchasing, food service, waste reduction, and chemical use. One position.
Volunteer Coordinator
Recruit and schedule students interested in assisting with Environmental Center projects. Coordinate volunteer events, produce posters and brochures, send weekly email updates, and follow-up personally with volunteers. Represent Environmental Center and conduct direct outreach to students. Must be available to begin working before or during first week of classes. One position.
Water Conservation Coordinator
Educate students, staff and faculty on the benefits of reducing water use on campus. Design creative displays, flyers and advertisements, table at events, distribute information to students and campus departments. One position.
Web Site Coordinator
Maintain and update the Environmental Center Web site (www.colorado.edu/ecenter). Dreamweaver experience necessary. One position.
