Application and Hiring Information
The CU Environmental Center is no longer accepting applications for 2009-10 student employment positions. You are welcome to complete an online employment application in the case that a position becomes available during the year, however we do not foresee any openings again until August 2010. Please note that the Environmental Center often hires students who first volunteer with one of our programs or another student group -- start networking by checking out our many volunteer opportunities!
The Environmental Center educates, activates and inspires the campus community to understand and engage in local and global environmental issues. E-Center student staff work on projects that make the University of Colorado at Boulder campus more sustainable and make a positive impact on the community. Many programs and projects have led the way nationally for sustainable improvements at other universities and communities. Undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of majors such as (but not limited to) communication, political science, engineering, business, architecture, biology, education, and environmental studies work with the CU Environmental Center.
Recognizing that diversity and broader social justice initiatives are key components of sustainability, the Environmental Center strives for diversity, inclusivity, and social justice in our staff, programs and activities. Applications are sought and encouraged from underrepresented students at CU: low-income students, students of color, first-generation students, students with disabilities, LGBTQI students, and non-traditional students.
Student staff are hired in August for each academic year, and open positions are rare at other times. Positions are for the full academic year, and work commitment varies from 5 - 20 hours per week depending on position. To apply for fall openings, see job descriptions for open positions and fill out the online application. Application deadline for fall 2009 was August 10, 2009. Select applicants are contacted each year in late August, and final hiring decisions are made by the second week of fall semester classes.
Application instructions for fall openings:
- 1. Submit an online application. Include as much information about yourself as possible. Please include your contact information for August, as well as when you are available to begin work. You may apply for more than one position — list 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc. Call 303-492-8308 or email ecenter@colorado.edu if you have any questions.
- 2. Submit the application for fall openings by the August 10th priority deadline. If you apply after August 10th, your application will still be considered if there are openings. Applications received after August 24th cannot be considered, due to the high number of applications received.
- 3. We review all applications for fall openings and then select candidates to interview. Typically, over 200 applications are submitted for about 30 openings. It is not possible for us to interview all applicants. You should receive an e-mail by the beginning of classes notifying you if you were or were not selected as a candidate for an interview.
- 4. Interviews take place August 18th - 28th. Hiring decisions are made by September 4th.
- 5. Please be aware that to work on campus you must show your original Social Security Card (not a copy), or an application for one, at the time that you begin employment.
- 6. If have a resume, you can email it as a Microsoft Word or PDF document to ecenter@colorado.edu, to supplement your online application. Please title your emailed attachment as Your First Name_Last Name.doc or .pdf (example Jane_Smith.doc). Note that you must also complete the online application in order to be considered for an employment position, a resume alone will not be considered as an application. On the application, you can fill in “see resume” on applicable questions.
- 7. The Environmental Center can only hire students officially registered in a degree-seeking program at the University of Colorado at Boulder (or CU Boulder students in the official time-out program). For summer positions, students do not have to be taking summer classes, but must be enrolled and taking classes for the following fall semester.
